Yethnal’s letter to PM on abolishing Waqf Act
In a recent development, BJP leader Yethnal has written a letter to the Prime Minister, calling for the abolition of the Waqf Act. Yethnal’s alleges widespread misuse of land by the Waqf Board, and he urges the Prime Minister to abolish the act. He claims that doing so would recover substantial government funds. However, it is important to note that Yethnal has faced criticism for his past hate mongering, raising concerns of Islamophobia.
Newly elected Chairman of the Karnataka Waqf Board, Anwar Basha, has dismissed Yethnal’s comments, accusing the BJP and RSS of consistently targeting their community with such statements. He says no attention shoul be given to such statements.
Senior Congress Leader K Rehman Khan speaking on the matter, emphasized the historical context of the Waqf Act, which has been in place since 1956. He clarifies that the act primarily serves as a regulatory mechanism to oversee Waqf properties, much like temples have their properties managed. He says that these properties do not belong to any specific caste or the government. He highlighted that if the Waqf Act were to be abolished, several other similar acts would also require to be abolished.
